The Gaming Giant Recruits Apex Legends Lead to Rescue Challenged Action Game Ambitious Title

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Transition Comes After Lukewarm Response

The new appointee takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last fall.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed employees about this strategic move through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a distinct game identity.

The president noted that the developers is now refining the project with a revised vision, aiming to address community desires.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

The news follows a comparable move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock development group.

Here is the full message from the president's announcement:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just completed your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a note, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative creators we have had the chance to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to persist.”

With your dedication and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It validated the potential of a action-packed game but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the requirement for a sharper brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the feedback to mind and overhauled the title with a revitalized goal - one that’s poised to achieve its promise to our fans.

The belief in this project grows every day. To boost the remarkable advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of the team. After several months of conversations, he officially joins us on next week.

Ben’s guidance and background in the competitive gaming space is considerable, having spent the recent years producing and leading some of the most well-known titles in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in welcoming Ben next week. We are all looking forward to continue observing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the months to come.

David

Background of the Incoming Leader

Brinkman presently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in various production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, prior to that, had stints at other industry leaders.

Game Details and Concept

Project Ethos was revealed in last year alongside a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary states. "Face the competition with fresh skills, risks, and challenges that change every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or go big, put it on the line, and hope your team can secure victory? The option is in your hands."

Project Ethos lacks an official launch window or supported systems, but enthusiasts can look forward to more updates as creation advances.
