Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not only the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
